You’re vs. Your

Why wouldn’t we all stumble over the words “you’re” and “your”? They almost sound the same, but they do have very different usages. Here’s the scoop on what’s different between them.

YOU’RE

“You’re” is actually what is called a ‘contraction’ or a ‘short form’ of “You are”. Thus, we say “you’re making a mistake” which means “ YOU ARE making a mistake”.

YOUR

“Your” is a possessive pronoun. We use it in the same way we use “his”, “her”, “theirs”, etc. Thus, we say “your mistake is a small one”.

This is why, if we say “you’re mistake is a small one”, it would mean “you are mistake is a small one” which makes no sense at all. And if you’ve said that, your mistake was indeed a big one.
